The Stepmother by Claire Seeber **Blog Tour**

It’s my very great pleasure to be today’s stop on the blog tour for The Stepmother by Claire Seeber! I’ve been a big fan since Claire’s first book Lullaby so I was REALLY keen to read her latest book and my review is shown below!

About this book…

The perfect wife. A fairytale family. Don’t believe your eyes…

Jeanie and Matthew are a happily married couple who both have teenage children from previous relationships.

No one said it would be easy to raise a blended family under one roof but Jeanie and Matthew are strong. They will make it work.

And whilst Jeanie’s step-daughter Scarlett rejects her, Jeanie will just have to try harder to win her over.

But Jeanie has a past. A terrible secret she thought she’d buried a long time ago. And now, it’s coming to the surface, threatening to destroy her new marriage.

Someone is playing a terrifying game on Jeanie and she must put a stop to it once and for all.

After all, a fairytale needs a happy ending…doesn’t it?

My review…

I think this book has made my blood pressure rise more than any other book that I have read this year! Honestly, I am quite a patient person normally but by about 70% into this book I was on high level anxiety and screaming “PLEASE PLEASE TELL ME WHATS GOING ON!!!!” I absolutely hate it when I have no idea where the story is going as I am normally Mrs “I KNEW that was going to happen” and so this book is definitely going to be one of my 5* reads for 2016! I just loved it!

I’m a big fan of the adult fairy tale, taking a child’s story and giving it that creepy adult twist that it probably had when first written anyway. And here, Claire gives us a well written twist on the story of Snow White and her wicked stepmother. I felt so helpless throughout this tale of Jeanie and the blended family that she finds herself in after marrying Matthew King. She struggles to bond with either of Matthews twins but especially with Scarlett, who is at that awkward stage of being a teenager, on the cusp of womanhood but still deep down a little girl. I really felt for Jeanie, she was one of life’s people pleasers, always putting others before herself. But believing the best in everyone leaves her vulnerable and someone is really messing with her head. Nowadays, most families have some experience of the blended family unit so this book really plays on those fears of what could happen when it becomes a battleground but The Stepmother really does take it to the extreme!

There were so many red herrings here that I suspected everything and everyone of being involved in what was happening to Jeanie. There were twists and turns galore and every time I thought I knew what was going on, another spanner was thrown in the works and I was back to square one. I was emotionally drained by the time I got to the end!

I really enjoyed Claire’s last book 24 Hours which was a real adrenaline fuelled rollercoaster ride, but this was much more my cup of tea, full of twisty surprises with a cast of unlikable characters and a woman hiding secrets. This definitely deserves its “gripping psychological thriller” tagline and as for that twist…well, my lips are sealed!! So for a “can’t put it down” suspense for your summer read I can highly recommend The Stepmother!

I am a Norfolk girl living in leafy Cheshire with my grumpy Scotsman. A mum and nana who lives for my family but who is also addicted to reading (and Marmite!) I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. I am a member of netgalley and bookbridg. I review on Amazon, where I'm a Top 500 reviewer, and Goodreads. You can always find me over on Twitter @jocatrobertson for any review requests.
