My review…

I was really excited when I heard that Christina had written her debut novel as her blog has been one that I have enjoyed following for about 6 months now ever since I started blogging myself. I’ve included the link below so you can check it out yourselves. When she sent me a copy to review I was over the moon and very keen to see which direction her debut novel took.

At the start of this book there is a terrible tragedy that sees one of the main characters rushed to hospital in an ambulance. The action then heads back in time to the start of a new year at a University and we meet Callum, Ruby, Yasmine and Juliette. Their lives are about to become entangled over the next year leading to the dramatic incident in the opening chapter. Callum tells his story via a series of emails. He has a secret he is hiding and its a while before we find out the recipient of those emails. He makes an instant connection with football mad Ruby (who drove ME mad with the fact she constantly called everyone “mate”)but is himself being watched and converted by self obsessed Yasmine. Juliette is struggling with her own personal turmoil and I found her parts of the story quite frustrating  as I could see how she was trying to hide her true feelings. Callum was my favourite of them all, probably due to the quick witted and easy way he had when he was using his email as i felt this was when we saw the real Callum and not the one Ruby or Yasmine interacted with. Yasmine was just so determined to get her own way that she was blinkered to everyone else’s feelings and this meant I really did not take to her at all but throughout the book my feelings towards her and all the characters changed slightly depending on who’s version of events I was reading. But it all fitted in perfectly with what I remember of those first few months in Halls away from friends and family. It’s a tough year  mainly as its their first time away from home, meeting others from different backgrounds and there is a kind of transition from dependent child to the adult they will become. Overall the book reminded me in a way of the tv show “The Affair” where the same story is told through different eyes and each person sees things in a totally different light. And that ending! Totally unexpected! The author has done a brilliant job of keeping the reader in a state of suspense until the plot starts unravelling.

This would be a great book for 16+ especially those taking that leap into higher education, as well as the adult market. It’s perfectly thought out and so well written that it’s a fabulous achievement for a debut novel. I can’t wait to see where Christina goes from here and I will be following her journey as an author as avidly as I did her first novel.

Christina Philippou’s writing career has been a varied one, from populating the short-story notebook that lived under her desk at school to penning reports on corruption and terrorist finance. When not reading or writing, she can be found engaging in sport or undertaking some form of nature appreciation. Christina has three passports to go with her three children, but is not a spy. Lost in Static is her first novel.
