Duplicity by Sibel Hodge #BookReview @sibelhodge

About this book…

There are three sides to every story: Yours. Mine. And the truth…

Max and Alissa have a fairy tale life—newlywed, madly in love and enviously rich. Then Max is brutally stabbed to death at their home and Alissa, miraculously, escapes with her life. But why was she spared?

The hunt for the killer begins, uncovering a number of leads—was Max’s incredible wealth the motive? Had his shady business practices finally caught up with him? Or was it a stalker with a dangerous obsession?

Devoted friends rally around gentle, sweet Alissa as she is left to mourn the loss of her husband and pick up her life. But not everyone is who they seem…Deep-rooted jealousies, secrets and twisted love lie just beneath the surface, and not all fairy tales have a happy ending.

Duplicity is a suspenseful thriller from the bestselling author of Look Behind You and Where the Memories Lie.

My review…

I have been a huge fan of this author since Look Behind You which I actually named recently as one of my top 20 All Time Favourite books. I find her relaxed writing style really suits me as a reader and I become quite involved in her storytelling very quickly and deeply. I am probably in the minority though in saying that although I read her last book Untouchable earlier on in the year, I hadn’t enjoyed it as much as I would normally would have expected to. So I was looking forward to seeing if Duplicity was back to the psychological suspense that I have come to expect and love. And luckily for me, it was!

I do have to admit that to begin with I found myself taking a while to settle into the different points of view that the story was told from. But once I did, well I couldn’t put this book down and totally devoured it in a matter of hours! The chapters told by an unknown narrator were absolutely horrific and I was desperate to work out who it was and how they fitted in to what had happened to Max. I thought I had guessed but I was miles off!  I just adored the twists and turns of this plot and it continued to surprise me all the way to the finish. It was definitely a book of two halves though and after a rather unsettling and unexpected scene this thriller quickly became a rollercoaster of emotions as it headed towards its intense and shocking conclusion.

I found myself not trusting a single character here and I also have to admit to not particularly liking many of them either….apart from DS Carter whom I absolutely adored! Having lost his wife, I found that this made him a supportive friend to those who needed him but also made him feel he had a lot more to prove in his career, which is where he started to come apart a bit!  I felt increasingly protective of him as the plot thickened and found it difficult to watch him make some of the decisions he made and the risks he took. I just wanted him to catch the killer and prove himself to his superiors soon he could get his life back on track.

I would hate to give away anything about the plot twists as I want EVERYONE to be as shocked and surprised by this book as I was. So if you can, go into it knowing as little as possible. Sibel Hodge really is a fabulous storyteller and has excelled herself here with this deeply compelling mystery. I actually had goosebumps during the last few pages! I absolutely loved it!

I am a Norfolk girl living in leafy Cheshire with my grumpy Scotsman. A mum and nana who lives for my family but who is also addicted to reading (and Marmite!) I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. I am a member of netgalley and bookbridg. I review on Amazon, where I'm a Top 500 reviewer, and Goodreads. You can always find me over on Twitter @jocatrobertson for any review requests.
