About this book…

In this tautly crafted tale of psychological suspense, a recently widowed mother resorts to the unthinkable to protect her shattered family. But does she go too far?

After mystery author Diane Christie loses her husband to suicide, she and her son move to the small coastal town of Fog Harbor, Massachusetts. Her daughter is attending college nearby, and Diane hopes that her family can now begin to heal. But rebuilding their lives after the tragedy isn’t so simple.

Diane’s depressed college-age daughter, Alexa, still avoids her, critical of everything Diane does, and even her generally amiable teenage son, Josh, has started acting out. Diane pushes forward, focusing on her writing and her volunteer work at a local crisis hotline. She knows that healing takes time.

But then a girl from Alexa’s college is found strangled. Worse still, the murderer uses the crisis hotline to confess to Diane . . . and claims she is the only one who can stop the killing. And just when the glow of new love from an attractive admirer begins to chase away some of the darkness, more girls turn up dead, and Diane races to solve a mystery she fears will hit terrifyingly close to home.

My review…

I discovered Jennifer Jaynes a couple of years ago when I read her debut Never Smile at Strangers and absolutely loved it. I was so happy to find a new author to surprise and shock me that I made sure I bought the next two books in the trilogy. And when that series finished I was gutted! So it was really exciting for me to discover that she has now written a standalone suspense thriller and wow, what a twisted tale she has woven here!

Diane Christie should be living the life -she’s a successful crime writer, living in coastal Massachusetts in a beautiful home. But her husband’s suicide and her daughter’s subsequent depression mean that Diane is constantly on edge. Whilst Alexa lives away from home at college, Diane lives with her teenage son Josh. She spends her days writing and volunteering at crisis centre but is about to become more involved with a serial killer than she could ever have imagined. And this killer is seriously creepy! The scenes where the victims are being stalked are terrifying due to the calm determination of this unknown psychopath.

If ever a book deserves a page-turner tag then it’s The Stranger Inside! I just couldn’t put it down! I took to Diane immediately and felt so sorry that, although she was living her dream as a successful crime writer and also giving something back to her local community, she obviously wasn’t happy. Alexa seemed to be the root cause of her problems and although Diane appeared to be trying her best as a mother it was always thrown back in her face. Once we started to meet the male characters I suspected absolutely every single one of them so it was fun trying to sift through all clues, trying to separate out the red herrings-this author does like to play plenty of mind games with her readers along the way!

I was utterly gobsmacked by the turns this compelling serial killer thriller took. It was chilling to say the least especially once the killer is revealed although I did seem to have more questions than were answered in the final few pages. But having read this author before I knew to expect the unexpected and I wasn’t disappointed! Jennifer Jaynes is fast becoming a must read author for me and I’m so pleased that I enjoyed this standalone book just as much as her Stranger series.

Many thanks to the author for my review copy of The Stranger Inside which is published in the UK on 9th May 2017

Meet the author…

USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Jaynes has always had a passion for writing, even if it took her a while to turn her passion into a career. After graduating from Old Dominion University with a bachelor’s degree in health sciences and a minor in management, she made her living as a content manager, webmaster, news publisher, editor, and copywriter. Then everything changed in 2014 when her first novel, Never Smile at Strangers, topped bestseller lists at USA Today, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble. At that point, there was no going back.

Since her debut, Jennifer has added two more novels to the Strangers Series and has released her first stand-alone. When she’s not writing or spending time with her husband and twin sons, Jennifer loves reading, cooking, and studying nutrition. She and her family live in the Dallas area.

I am a Norfolk girl living in leafy Cheshire with my grumpy Scotsman. A mum and nana who lives for my family but who is also addicted to reading (and Marmite!) I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. I am a member of netgalley and bookbridg. I review on Amazon, where I'm a Top 500 reviewer, and Goodreads. You can always find me over on Twitter @jocatrobertson for any review requests.

  1. I think I’ve read another of her books and really liked that one as well. I like that there are also multiple suspects here and she doesn’t make it too easy to find out. I like the sound of this one very much. Great review!
