Palm Beach Finland by Antti Tuomainen @OrendaBooks

I’m thrilled to be sharing my review of Palm Beach Finland by Antti Tuomainen today especially as IT’S THE FIRST DAY OF THE BLOG TOUR! Woohoo! Make sure you catch what the other reviewers on the tour are saying by following them via the tour poster below. Many thanks to Anne Cater and Karen Sullivan for my review copy of the book and inviting me onboard!

About this book…

Jan Nyman, the ace detective of the covert operations unit of the National Central Police, is sent to a sleepy seaside town to investigate a mysterious death. Nyman arrives in the town dominated by a bizarre holiday village – the ‘hottest beach in Finland’. The suspect: Olivia Koski, who has only recently returned to her old hometown. The mission: find out what happened, by any means necessary. With a nod to Fargo, and the darkest noir, Palm Beach, Finland is both a page-turning thriller and a wicked black comedy about lust for money, fleeing dreams and people struggling at turning points in their lives … from the ‘King of Helsinki Noir’.

My review…

The Man Who Died by Antti Tuomainen was, unexpectedly, one of my most pleasurable reads earlier on this year so I knew that I needed to read his latest, Palm Beach Finland. I mean, with a title like that you must be intrigued too right?! And once again I’ve enjoyed a darkly humorous slice of Finnish life which had me chuckling at some rather outlandish scenes! My imagination was working overtime with some of the tableaux presented by the author and often not in a good way!!

If you enjoy your crime on the “comedy of errors” side and have a morbid sense of humour then this is a book that’s crying out for your attention. The characters come alive before your eyes and I struggled to pick out a favourite, although Olivia and Jan are very much up there. And Leivo must have an extra special mention as the overly positive owner of the resort who also got the best lines in the book! Summer 2018 has been the summer of the flamingo (we had a huge blow up one in our pool and in honour of it, I bought a flamingo covered swimming costume!) but now whenever I see a flamingo I will think of Palm Beach Finland. Now there’s a sentence I never thought I’d write!

Weird but wonderful and utterly addictive with its fast paced storyline that can be compared to a Finnish Fargo. Enjoy!

Meet the author…

Finnish Antti Tuomainen was an award-winning copywriter when he made his literary debut in 2007 as a suspense author. The critically acclaimed My Brother’s Keeper was published two years later. In 2011, Tuomainen’s third novel, The Healer, was awarded the Clue Award for ‘Best Finnish Crime Novel of 2011’ and was shortlisted for the Glass Key Award. Two years later, in 2013, the Finnish press crowned Tuomainen the ‘King of Helsinki Noir’ when Dark as My Heart was published. With a piercing and evocative style, Tuomainen was one of the first to challenge the Scandinavian crime genre formula, and his poignant, dark and hilarious The Man Who Died became an international bestseller, shortlisting for the Petrona and Last Laugh Awards.

I am a Norfolk girl living in leafy Cheshire with my grumpy Scotsman. A mum and nana who lives for my family but who is also addicted to reading (and Marmite!) I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. I am a member of netgalley and bookbridg. I review on Amazon, where I'm a Top 500 reviewer, and Goodreads. You can always find me over on Twitter @jocatrobertson for any review requests.
