Sleep by C.L. Taylor #blogtour

Today is an exciting day for me as I’m reviewing Sleep by the wonderful Cally Taylor as part of the blog tour. Huge thanks to Sabah at Avon for my review copy and my invite onto the tour.

About this book…

All Anna wants is to be able to sleep. But crushing insomnia, terrifying night terrors and memories of that terrible night are making it impossible. If only she didn’t feel so guilty…

To escape her past, Anna takes a job at a hotel on the remote Scottish island of Rum, but when seven guests join her, what started as a retreat from the world turns into a deadly nightmare.

Each of the guests have a secret, but one of them is lying – about who they are and why they’re on the island. There’s a murderer staying in the Bay View hotel. And they’ve set their sights on Anna.

Seven strangers. Seven secrets. One deadly lie.

Someone’s going to sleep and never wake up…

My review…

I’m not surprised that I have seen many comparisons to Agatha Christie for Sleep as it really did bring to mind her novels especially Ten Little Indians and The Mousetrap where a group of strangers are brought together and then trapped together with killer on the loose. And it’s also rather ironic that the book is called Sleep because it’s actually a sleep-stealer! I picked it up one evening to read and didn’t put it down until the wee small hours of the morning as I just had to finish it but was then unable to sleep due to the plot still whizzing round in my head!

Anna has had a terrible experience and wants to escape from the world and everything that reminds her of what happened. She can’t sleep and then when she does the most horrible nightmares haunt her. Taking a new job on the island of Rum, she becomes an assistant to David who manages a hotel on the island. But when guests checked in to enjoy the local walks and scenery and a storm arrives to cut them all off from the mainland and the rest of the island, a death occurs. Is there a murderer amongst the new guests? If so, who is it and is it anything to do with what happened to Anna? She certainly thinks so as she starts to document the days they are stranded, naming the guests incase something happens to her. And I had absolutely no idea who was tormenting her or why?! Yes, I had a few good guesses (all wrong!) but ultimately the twists and turns totally fooled me.

I loved the darkly, claustrophobic atmosphere here, with so many characters in such a restricted setting and Cally Taylor really brought them all vividly to life. Sleep is an addictive read, genuinely chilling with a breathtaking denouement. It had my pulse racing as the final few scenes played out and everything came together with a brilliantly crafted conclusion.

Highly recommended by me!
