Imposter by L.J. Ross #bookreview

About this book…

There’s a killer inside all of us…

After an elite criminal profiling unit is shut down amidst a storm of scandal and mismanagement, only one person emerges unscathed. Forensic psychologist Doctor Alexander Gregory has a reputation for being able to step inside the darkest minds to uncover whatever secrets lie hidden there and, soon enough, he finds himself drawn into the murky world of murder investigation.

In the beautiful hills of County Mayo, Ireland, a killer is on the loose. Panic has a stranglehold on its rural community and the Garda are running out of time. Gregory has sworn to follow a quiet life but, when the call comes, can he refuse to help their desperate search for justice?

Murder and mystery are peppered with dark humour in this fast-paced thriller set amidst the spectacular Irish landscape.

My review…

I’m a HUGE L.J. Ross fan but I have to admit to feeling a little worried when I heard that this book was going to be a non Ryan one and was the first book in a new series. The series will focus on forensics psychologist Doctor Alexander Gregory who will travel the world using his skills to delve into the darkest side of human nature and help to solve crimes. In Imposter, he is pulled away from the secure hospital where he works to County Mayo where a killer is targeting a small village community and the Garda are struggling to find the culprit.

I really liked Alexander Gregory and rather surprised myself by becoming very quickly immersed in his work and the incredibly frustrating case that he was called in to help on. I liked the small village portrayal and found plenty of characters living there who were detailed but intriguing and likeable but standoffish at the same time. I trusted no one as I was convinced I was missing the bigger picture somewhere…and I was!

I became completely obsessed by this storyline once I started it and read it very quickly in a couple of sittings, unable to put it down. In fact, I loved it so much that the end of Imposter I was like “DCI who?!” (Only joking!) But whilst DCI Ryan is living his best life in Northumberland, I am VERY happy to be left in the very capable hands of Alexander Gregory! L.J. Ross has weaved a beautifully crafted crime novel around him in Imposter and I can’t wait for book 2.

Highly recommended by me!
