Avenge The Dead by Jackie Baldwin #blogtour @damppebbles @JackieMBaldwin1 @OneMoreChapter

Today I’m delighted to be on the blog tour for Avenge The Dead, the third DI Farrell novel by Jackie Baldwin. Many thanks to Emma Welton for my blog tour invite and review copy of the book.

Sometimes murder is the only way to get even…

Four friends with dark secrets. One killer out for revenge.

DI Frank Farrell and DS McLeod are tasked with investigating the brutal murder of a defence solicitor’s wife in Dumfries.

It’s been over a year since they left the town after an investigation robbed them of a dear friend. But now they’re back and must find a way to move on.

When the son of another defence solicitor is murdered, a strange tattoo etched on his body, the case takes them into darker, more disturbing territory.

It leads them back into the past – to a horrific fire in a cottage that took a woman’s life, to four friends harbouring dark secrets – and finally to a killer waiting patiently for revenge.

I love this series! DI Frank Farrell is a fabulously complex character with an intriguing background and I’ve really enjoyed watching his personal development through these three books. After the last book where an investigation led to personal tragedy, Frank and Mhairi are back to investigate the death of the wife of a defence solicitor. But when more murders follow, they realise that the deaths may be connected to a fire 10 years ago in which a young woman tragically burnt to death.

This was a full on read for me that grabbed me from the very first page. The case itself is full of red herrings and every time I thought I’d worked out who was responsible and why, another spanner was thrown into the works to prove me wrong! The writing is engaging and Jackie Baldwin really brings DI Farrell to life through her expertly plotted narrative. I have a real soft spot for this detective and love watching his personal internal battle between his old life as a priest and his new one on the police force. His working relationships compliment his personal struggle by giving him plenty to think about and I especially love the interaction between him and DS McLeod. This is teamwork at its very best and their friendship felt authentic and relatable. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes (if anywhere!) from here!

Avenge The Dead is a must read for fans of Scottish crime fiction so do treat yourself to this cleverly crafted thriller. And although it can be read as a stand-alone, make sure you do read the other books in the series too to get the full DI Farrell backstory as it’s a good ‘un!

Highly recommended by me!

I am a Norfolk girl living in leafy Cheshire with my grumpy Scotsman. A mum and nana who lives for my family but who is also addicted to reading (and Marmite!) I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. I am a member of netgalley and bookbridg. I review on Amazon, where I'm a Top 500 reviewer, and Goodreads. You can always find me over on Twitter @jocatrobertson for any review requests.
