Wilderness by B.E. Jones @damppebbles @DamppebblesBTs @bevjoneswriting

Today I’m sharing the review of a book that was one of my top recommendations last year. Thanks to Emma Welton of damppebbles blog tours for introducing me to Wilderness by B.E. Jones!

A dream road trip turned dark nightmare.

Two weeks, 1,500 miles and three opportunities for her husband to save his own life.

It isn’t about his survival – it’s about hers.

Shattered by the discovery of her husband’s affair, Liv knows they need to leave the chaos of New York to try and save their marriage. Maybe the road trip they’d always planned, exploring America’s national parks – just the two of them – would help heal the wounds.

But what Liv hasn’t told her husband is that she has set him three challenges on their trip – three opportunities to prove he’s really sorry and worthy of her forgiveness.

If he fails? Well, it’s dangerous out there. There are so many ways to die in the wilderness; accidents happen all the time.

And if it’s easy to die, then it’s also easy to kill.

I read Halfway by B.E Jones last year and liked it enough to say a big, fat YES when I was asked to be on the blog tour for her newest book. But I was blown away but how much I loved Wilderness compared to Halfway! It had a completely different style of writing and plotting compared to her previous book and it worked perfectly for me! This is a brilliant psychological thriller with plenty of “love to hate” characters and lots of twists to keep you on your toes!

Liv has discovered her husband is a cheat. They have relocated from Wales to New York and she is now obsessed by his affair and the lies he is still telling. A road trip to discover the beauty and wilderness of the national parks is also a test for him to prove he is still a worthy husband because if he isn’t then she’s in the perfect place for him to “disappear”. But this book is so much more than I’ve described here! It’s a brilliant insight into the breakdown of a relationship but with plenty of unexpected twists and turns throughout!

I absolutely devoured Wilderness! It took me a little while to get my bearings, mainly because it wasn’t what I was expecting after reading her previous book, but I was hooked pretty quickly into the nightmarish and ugly breakdown of their marriage that clashed so well with the beautifully wild and unstructured setting. None of the characters were particularly likeable with their flawed, direct demands on themselves and others and I trusted absolutely NO ONE but, for me, this is my perfect storyline. As all paths lead to a shocking denouement, I had no idea how I was going to fight through the tangled mess that had been left behind but it all came together with a very satisfying ending.

I can highly recommend Wilderness for anyone who loves domestic noir psychological thrillers as much as I do and this is definitely one of the best I’ve read this year so far! Absolutely brilliant!

B.E. Jones is a former journalist and police press officer, now a novelist and book obsessive. She was born in a small village in the South Wales valleys, north of Cardiff and started her journalism career with Trinity Mirror newspapers before becoming a broadcast journalist with BBC Wales Today.

She has worked on all aspects of crime reporting (as well as community news and features) producing stories and content for newspapers and live TV. Most recently she worked as a press officer for South Wales Police, dealing with the media and participating in criminal investigations, security operations and emergency planning. Perhaps unsurprisingly she channels these experiences of ‘true crime,’ and her insight into the murkier side of human nature, into her dark, psychological thrillers set in and around South Wales.
