“If you want to see your daughter alive again, listen carefully.”

When the body of a snatched schoolgirl is found in an abandoned biosciences building, the case is first treated as a kidnapping gone wrong.

But Detective Kay Hunter isn’t convinced, especially when a man is found dead with the ransom money still in his possession.

When a second schoolgirl is taken, Kay’s worst fears are realized.

With her career in jeopardy – desperate to conceal a disturbing secret, Kay’s hunt for the killer becomes a race against time before he claims another life.

For the killer, the game has only just begun….

Scared to Death is the first book in a new crime thriller series featuring Kay Hunter – a detective with a hidden past and an uncertain future….

If you like the Kim Stone series by Angela Marsons, Peter Robinson’s DCI Banks series and the Erika Foster series by Robert Bryndza, discover Rachel Amphlett’s new detective novels today.

This book has accompanied me on my early morning lockdown dog walks and we have been going further and further each day as I got more and more involved and gripped by this fantastic start to the Kay Hunter series. Book 1 is called Scared to Death and is about a serial killer who, quite literally, scares his victims to death! It’s a darkly themed plot and could be disturbing at times but OMG what a brilliant listen this was!

Kay Hunter is brought to life perfectly by the narrator Alison Campbell and I really relates to her. She’s good at her job and put everything she has into this case even though her personal life has a tragedy that she she is still struggling with. Her relationships with both her colleagues and her husband were well crafted and realistically challenging. And if you think the storyline seems a little predictable then think again!! There are plenty of twist and turns awaiting you as Kay hunts down the sick perpetrator of these crimes. Lovers of true crime may notice a similarity to the “Black Panther” case which has always shocked and horrified me.

Alison Campbell was definitely Kay Hunter in my “ears” and I will certainly seek out more on Audible by Rachel Amphlett. Highly recommended by me.

I am a Norfolk girl living in leafy Cheshire with my grumpy Scotsman. A mum and nana who lives for my family but who is also addicted to reading (and Marmite!) I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate. I am a member of netgalley and bookbridg. I review on Amazon, where I'm a Top 500 reviewer, and Goodreads. You can always find me over on Twitter @jocatrobertson for any review requests.
