What to buy in March? Lie Beside Me by Gytha Lodge

Louise wakes up. Her head aches, her mouth is dry, her memory is fuzzy. But she suspects she’s done something bad.

She rolls over towards her husband, Niall.

But it’s not Niall who’s lying beside her. In fact, she’s never seen this man before.

And he’s dead . . .

As Louise desperately struggles to piece her memories back together, Detective Jonah Sheens and his team mark her as their prime suspect.

But she’s not the only one with something to hide . . .

Did she do it?

And, if not, can they catch the real killer before they strike again?

I’ve been a huge fan of this series since the first book, She Lies In Wait, introduced us to Jonah Sheens. As you know I only follow a few crime series now due to becoming mentally overwhelmed by the amount out there and now I’ve only chosen the “creme de la creme” to buy and read. Gytha Lodge writes brilliant storylines that always have a killer hook and grip the reader from the very first page. And the first few pages of Lie Beside Me are shocking, compelling and utterly intriguing-who is the man that Louise has woken up next to and how did he die? Those questions are eventually answered but it takes a few dramatic twists and turns for the penny to drop for Jonah and his team…

What I love about this series are the credible creations of both the regular characters and those in the case that they are called in to investigate. Jonah doesn’t appear on many pages but when he does, he grabs the spotlight with some very dramatic revelations. Louise’s perspective takes the form of her telling an unknown person her story, from the moment she wakes up beside a murdered stranger right through to the shocking moment all the threads of this richly woven tapestry come together. I found her to be a fascinating and complex person and loved the “Drunk Louise” persona she seemed very happy to drown herself in time and time again…

Gytha Lodge kept me guessing until the very last moment and up until her big reveal I had absolutely no idea how everything was going to come together. There was a slight cliffhanger of an ending for Jonah that has left me desperate to find out how he will handle the unexpected situation he finds himself in. I absolutely love this series and can’t recommend it highly enough!

Gytha Lodge is a multi-award-winning playwright, novelist and writer for video games and screen. She is also a single parent who blogs about the ridiculousness of bringing up a mega-nerd small boy.

She has a profound addiction to tea, crosswords and awful puns. She studied English at Cambridge, where she became known quite quickly for her brand of twisty, dark yet entertaining drama. She later took the Creative Writing MA at UEA.

Her debut crime novel, She Lies in Wait, has been published by Penguin Random House in the US and UK, and has also been translated into 12 other languages. It became an international bestseller in 2019, and was a Richard and Judy book club pick, as well as a Sunday Times and New York Times crime pick.

Watching From the Dark, her second novel, was released in February 2020, with her third book lined up for spring of 2021.
