The Influencer by Miranda Rijks @damppebbles

I’m delighted to be part of the blog tour for The Influencer today and many thanks to Emma Walton for the tour invite and my review copy of the book.

She is worshiped by millions. But she has a secret…

Adored by her legions of followers, social media megastar Skye is an inspiration. Once homeless, she is now fantastically wealthy, enormously powerful.  A ‘like’ from Skye can literally change your life.

So when she suggests partnering with Nathan’s charity for the homeless, he thinks it’s a match made in heaven. With Skye’s backing, who knows what he can achieve? And no-one is more excited than Nathan’s teenage daughters, both massive fans of the star.

But it soon becomes clear that Skye’s influence comes at a price. Yes, funds are pouring into Nathan’s charity, but she is a smothering presence, seemingly determined to insert herself into every nook and cranny of his family life.

Nathan’s daughters are thrilled to have so much up close and personal contact with a superstar. But he worries about Skye’s growing influence on them… And is it just a coincidence that ever since she’s been around, his personal life is disintegrating?

As things spiral out of control, Nathan begins to wonder what Skye really wants from him and his daughters. The answer is more terrifying than he could ever imagine…

Miranda Rijks writes very chilling and topical psychological thrillers so it was no surprise to find she used social media and the dark side surrounding it as the central theme of her latest book The Influencer. Her main character, Skye, has a huge following on social media and when she wants to use her fame to help Nathan’s charity (set up to honour his late wife) you would think that he would be over the moon! And to be honest he is to begin with but then Skye seems to be ingratiating herself further into his personal and family life as well which wasn’t part of the deal. Why? The answers are going to deliver a fair few surprises to everyone!

The Influencer grabbed me right from the start! It was one of those books where the pages seemed to turn themselves in anticipation of what was going to happen next. Skye’s backstory was heartbreaking-living on the streets after being taken away from her drug addicted mother and a series of failed foster homes. So how amazing was it for her to be living the high life, loved and adored by all her followers. Now I know not to believe all that you see on social media but that backstory made me so happy for her! And then it became obvious that things weren’t quite as great as Skye wanted everyone to believe but that still left me with questions as things weren’t adding up for me!

There are twists and turns galore as The Influencer thunders towards it shocking denouement-some I had guessed beforehand-but the last page left me chilled to the bone. Miranda Rijks never fails to keep me on the edge of seat and she has once again delivered a gripping storyline from start to finish.
