Till death do us part… never felt so close
Lucy has dreamt of her wedding day for as long as she can remember. And now the day is almost here. Her nearest and dearest are gathered on an idyllic Greek island and she just knows it’s going to be perfect. It has to be.
But even the best-laid plans can go horribly wrong. What is the secret her parents are keeping from her? Who is the silent stranger her sister brought as a plus-1?
And then they find the body…
Having seen how much work was needed to organise my daughters own Greek wedding 2 years ago, I know first hand how stressful it can be but at least we didn’t have to deal with a dead body! And that’s what has obviously happened on Lucy’s dream wedding day on the beautiful Greek island of Kefalonia although we don’t find out who, how or why until much nearer the end of The Wedding Party. But the local police department are questioning the wedding guests and these police interviews are interspersed throughout the narrative as we follow Lucy’s preparations for the best day of her life…it’s certainly going to be remembered but probably not for the right reasons!
If you love a psychological thriller with unreliable narrators, unlikeable characters and a plot twistier than a plate of spaghetti then The Wedding Party is going to be right up your street. And if you are braving travelling abroad to Greece this summer then this book definitely needs to be packed away in your suitcase! Kefalonia is a stunning holiday destination and Tammy Cohen has done it justice with her beautifully delivered descriptions of the scenery and local landmarks. The contrast between that natural beauty of the island and the ugliness of the relationships between the characters was perfectly balanced. Everyone seemed to have something to hide from their partners, family members and friends so there was always an unpleasant undercurrent diverting attention from the wedding and the gorgeous location it was to take place in.
There were so many twists and turns during The Wedding Party that I felt dizzy and although some are revealed faster than others, there were plenty of shocks kept for the final few pages! This is a gripping book from start to finish and you can’t help but feel a little bit gleeful that this “bridezilla” isn’t having the wedding she’s worked so hard for!
Engaging and entertaining, The Wedding Party is the perfect read for your sun lounger this year and if you’re not away then read it in the garden with a bowl of olives and an ouzo. Enjoy!
