First Born by Will Dean

Molly lives a quiet, contained life in London. Naturally risk averse, she gains comfort from security and structure. Every day the same.

Her identical twin Katie is her exact opposite: gregarious and spontaneous. They used to be inseparable, until Katie moved to New York a year ago. Molly still speaks to her daily without fail.

But when Molly learns that Katie has died suddenly in New York, she is thrown into unfamiliar territory. Katie is part of her DNA. As terrifying as it is, she must go there and find out what happened. As she tracks her twin’s last movements, cracks begin to emerge. Nothing is what it seems. And a web of deceit is closing around her.

Delivering the same intensity of pace and storytelling that made THE LAST THING TO BURN a word-of-mouth sensation, FIRST BORN will surprise, shock and enthral.

OMG Will Dean has done it again! I absolutely loved First Born which is his second stand-alone book, living up to the brilliance of his first stand-alone novel The Last Thing Left to Burn. Now everyone knows I love a twin book but Will Dean has totally raised the barre for my favourite sub-genre in the future! Twins have never been so fascinating…or two faced!

Molly and Katie are identical twins but in personality they couldn’t be more different! Molly lives in London and hates unpredictability so she lives a carefully regimented and structured life to keep herself safely cemented in her own world. Katie is her exact opposite, a reflection in the mirror of identity who is outgoing, adventurous and sociable. But when their parents call Molly to tell her that her twin sister has died in New York where she’s been living for the past year, Molly’s world collapses. One half of her has gone and she knows she has to go to New York to comfort her parents and more importantly, find out why Katie died. What follows is a shocking journey of discovery and self determination as Molly uses her own efficiency to delve into her twins life, discovering some shocking revelations along the way…

This book has a completely different feel to The Last Thing Left To Burn but it’s just as complicated and compelling, keeping you guessing until the final horrifying reveal. I find twins completely fascinating, how they can look identical but be so different in personality and how sometimes they can be a mirror image of each other in temperament as well as looks. Molly and Katie were a perfect example of this and I especially found the relationship they had with each other and with their parents very intriguing. Will Dean writes with a confidence that holds your attention so deftly that when he does reveal his twists and turns they do come as a complete shock! I thought I knew where the storyline was heading but I couldn’t have been more wrong!

Highly recommended!

Will Dean grew up in the East Midlands, living in nine different villages before the age of eighteen. After studying law at the LSE, and working many varied jobs in London, he settled in rural Sweden with his wife. He built a wooden house in a boggy forest clearing and it’s from this base that he compulsively reads and writes.

I will read almost anything but my preferred genres to review are psychological thrillers, crime procedural novels or women's fiction. My kindle is my life but I also have a substantial bookshelf in my cosy reading room where I can go to escape the stresses of family life with plenty of tea and chocolate.
