On New Year’s Eve, Rhys Lloyd has a house full of guests.
His lakeside holiday homes are a success, and he’s generously invited the village to drink champagne with their wealthy new neighbours. This will be the party to end all parties.
But not everyone is there to celebrate. By midnight, Rhys will be floating dead in the freezing waters of the lake.
On New Year’s Day, DC Ffion Morgan has a village full of suspects.
The tiny community is her home, so the suspects are her neighbours, friends and family – and Ffion has her own secrets to protect.
With a lie uncovered at every turn, soon the question isn’t who wanted Rhys dead . . . but who finally killed him.
In a village with this many secrets, a murder is just the beginning.

OMG what an absolutely brilliant book and a magnificent start to the new DC Ffion Morgan series by Clare Mackintosh! I have to admit to feeling a little unsure when I found out this was the start of a crime series as I’ve loved all of this author’s previous stand-alone psychological thrillers. But anyone out there worrying that this won’t be as enjoyable as Clare’s other books, let me put your mind at rest and say to you-YOU NEED TO BUY AND READ THIS BOOK RIGHT NOW! It has jumped straight into my favourite books of 2022 and I really can’t remember the last time I went straight online to find out when the next book in the series is out (it’s not up on Amazon yet but as soon as it is my preorder is going in!!)
On New Years Eve, Rhys Lloyd is celebrating at his successful new business The Shore-exclusive holiday homes on the banks of a lake in North Wales. He has invites the wealthy owners of the holiday cottages plus the local community but by the time the New Year is being celebrated, the “host with the most” will lay dead in the lake that has facilitated his success. DC Ffion Morgan is part of the local community and knows the people and their secrets better than others especially as as she’s to have plenty of her own to hide…
Ffion is a brilliant character creation and her relationships with her friends, family and neighbours are perfectly portrayed within the beautifully described setting of North Wales. But above all, her interactions with Leo have put them very high on my favourite characters EVER list! I’m a big fan of Maeve Kerrigan and Josh Derwant in the books by Jane Casey and if you like those books then you are going to LOVE Ffion and Leo. How they meet, work together and the way in which they unintentionally bring out strength and hidden emotions in each other is just so well executed as they gradually learn to investigate the murder together.
Although the narrative follows Ffion and Leo whilst they carry out their inquiries and their own personal commitments, we actually work backwards from New Years Eve to discover what the suspects have been up to leading up to the murder of Rhys Lloyd. It becomes quite obvious that he wasn’t the popular person he liked to think he was! Everyone has a reason to hate the entrepreneur but are any of them enough to kill him? I have to admit to not having a clue as to who was responsible and the many twists and turns mean that nothing is ever quite as it seems! So everything came as quite a shock once things started to come together…
This is the perfect start to the new series and really did leave me wanting more! One of the best crime thrillers I’ve read this year and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
The Last Party is published by Sphere on 4th August 2022.
